Teaching, Outreach, and
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
I believe that teaching and training the next generation, reaching out to the general community, and advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are an integral part of my work as a scientist.
Sometimes people ask, why, as scientists, should we care about DEI issues?, or this is a meritocracy, so why DEI issues are relevant?, or how it relates to the study of the Universe? The answer to these questions (or any variation of these) is simple. We are human beings who do science; thus, human beings issue concern and affect us (paraphrasing from a statement said in one of Visceral Change workshops). In other words, we are sensitive to the same biases and faults as the rest of humanity. We can also adapt and improve ourselves, and drive for equity and help make science more accessible.

In 2019 I had the honor to be the recipient of the UCLA Career Commitment to Diversity DEI Award.
